St Albans City Band is part of a proud family of brass bands dedicated to providing grassroots brass music opportunities and sharing the joy of brass playing throughout St Albans and the surrounding communities. The band works closely with our Community and Youth Bands, creating a supportive and progressive musical environment for players of all ages and abilities.
We are a friendly, ambitious, and community-focused brass band seeking an enthusiastic and inspiring Musical Director (MD) to lead the band into its next phase. This is a compensated position, with a fixed fee covering rehearsals and performances.

Role Specification
The Musical Director will:
- Lead weekly rehearsals, planning engaging and appropriate repertoire
- Drive the musical and technical development of the band and its players
- Conduct the band at concerts, engagements, and contests as required
- Work collaboratively with the Community and Youth Band Musical Directors to support a joined-up musical pathway
- Foster a culture that is inclusive, motivating, educational, and enjoyable
- Work with the band committee to support the band’s artistic and organisational goals
- Organise and oversee sectional rehearsals where beneficial
- Encourage and develop small ensemble and solo opportunities
- Contribute to programming decisions and musical planning
- Provide updates and input at committee meetings and the AGM
- Support ongoing community engagement and outreach initiatives
- Uphold and promote the band’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion principles
Person Specification Experience & Skills
- Experience leading and developing a music ensemble
- Strong musical knowledge, ideally within a brass band setting
- Ability to motivate, coach, and inspire players of varied abilities
- Collaborative mindset and strong communication skills
- Connections within brass banding or the wider musical community (desirable)
